FEZ TRAVEL - ANZAC DAY
| 18 February 2012
Only The Best Will Do
The naming of ANZAC Day to commemorate the fallen in a day of national remembrance in Australia and New Zealand has never changed from April 25, 1916 when it was first observed with marches of the Gallipoli survivors, barely months out of the heartbreaking trenches. That the day has been observed annually since then is a testimony to its singular significance to each and every generation.
But to wait out the vigil in first light and to stand in respect at the dawn service on the very beach, ANZAC Cove, on the Gallipoli Peninsula, where the story started, is a moment in an Australian or New Zealander’s life, that is profoundly moving, and even joyful in the revelation of where their own identity belongs. To know that, be it at dawn ceremonies in their own home town, in the cities or outside Australia at monuments carved in hillsides and valleys where Australian soldiers fell, a nation is standing at your shoulder, in silence listening to the Last Post, is a moment never to be forgotten, a moment beyond all trite holiday shots.
Of course you may not feel the full impact until you have left the Cove, and warmed up (a lot!) by following the steps of the soldiers up through the scrubby hillsides to Lone Pine for the Australian ceremonies - a great contrast to the sombre beachside. Here amongst where the young lay in marked graves, the living, young and old, rejoice in the spirit of those thankful for the sacrifice- those larrikin idealists would be proud to hear voices filling the anthems and songs. Being from Down under, not all have given way to an odd tear, but bring out the traditional two-up game, and a few jokes using the same sense of humour from a century ago. By the end you may be laughing hard, and wondering at the gamut of emotions experienced in the last 24 hours. Treasure it, share it with your fellow travellers, and of course - take it home.
Add that experience of ANZAC Day to seeing more of Turkey, the country that not only welcomes but is truly happy to see you on its soil, just adds a wonderful new dimension to your experience. This country too, came of age at the same conflict, but it could not be more different, and is deeply fascinating.
